Am I a Good Candidate for the LAP-BAND® System?
By Jacqueline Osuna, MD on May 08, 2017
Excess weight prevents many individuals from achieving their aesthetic goals. However, while it is important for people to feel confident in their body, it is even more important that they are healthy. Evidence continues to show that people who are overweight are at a higher risk of a number of concerning health problems, including heart disease and type 2 diabetes.
Unfortunately, even knowing the health concerns, many people are simply unable to lose weight through regular diet and exercise. When these attempts have failed, it may be time to consider bariatric procedures, such as the LAP-BAND® system.
The LAP-BAND® system is placed around the stomach to restrict food intake, and help a patient feel fuller faster. LAP-BAND® system candidates at our Tijuana, MX and Guadalajara, MX clinics can kick-start weight loss to start the path to a healthier and more active lifestyle.
The LAP-BAND® Difference
Even when someone has been unsuccessful in losing weight, they may be hesitant to undergo bariatric surgery. Most bariatric procedures involve permanent alterations to the stomach and, often, the digestive tract. The LAP-BAND® system is different in that it does not change the size of the stomach and it does not interfere with the digestive system.
Instead, the LAP-BAND® system is an adjustable band that is placed around the stomach to limit food intake and create a fuller feeling for patients, helping them to eat less and lose weight. This minimally invasive procedure is unique from other bariatric procedures, and is the only one that is completely reversible. If a patient feels that they no longer need or want the LAP-BAND®, it can be removed.
LAP-BAND® System Candidates
Because of its unique characteristics, the LAP-BAND® system is ideal for patients who are looking to lose a significant amount of weight without permanently altering their body. The LAP-BAND® system is inserted laparoscopically, so the procedure is less invasive than other bariatric alternatives, and the recovery period should be shorter as well. Most patients adapt well to the LAP-BAND® system because it does not interfere with the digestive tract, meaning that the risk of complications and post-surgical gastrointestinal discomfort is also reduced.
Although the LAP-BAND® system is considered safe, it is still not advisable for patients who are only moderately overweight. In general, ideal candidates for the LAP-BAND® system are those with a BMI of 35 or higher, or those who are considered obese. Other patients who are likely to be ideal candidates are those who are suffering from other health problems that are directly related to their excess weight.
The LAP-BAND® system can help patients lose a great deal of weight and improve their overall health and quality of life. However, it is important that patients have realistic expectations for the results of surgery and the lifestyle changes they will need to make following surgery. Only those who are committed to adopting a healthier diet and a more active lifestyle are considered potential candidates for the LAP-BAND® system.
There are many guidelines that can indicate whether a person may be an ideal candidate for the LAP-BAND® system, but only a consultation with Dr. Jacqueline Osuna can determine whether LAP-BAND® surgery is right for patients.
