Laparoscopic Duodenal Switch Surgery

For patients who are severely overweight, daily tasks can become extremely difficult with excess weight decreasing mobility and quality of life. Often, bariatric surgery can prove the only effective option for lasting, significant weight loss. Dr. Jacqueline Osuna can decrease the size of your stomach and alter how your body digests food to help you achieve more dramatic weight loss. Known as a duodenal switch procedure, Dr. Osuna can perform this extensive surgery at our bariatric centers in Guadalajara and Tijuana, MX, to help patients prevent and manage serious health conditions. This method can also be performed to help patients who have previously undergone unsuccessful bariatric surgical treatment.

A duodenal switch procedure typically results in more dramatic weight loss than seen with other bariatric surgeries. Most patients lose more than half of their excess weight within just a year post-surgery.

When is Duodenal Switch Beneficial?

Due to the complexity of this procedure, it is typically reserved for patients who are severely obese, with an excess weight of 100 pounds or more and a body mass index, or BMI, of more than 45. Patients with a lower BMI but with multiple severe health complications related to obesity may also qualify for this procedure. A duodenal switch surgery can help you achieve dramatic weight loss while also lowering your risk for co-morbidities, including:

  • Type 2 Diabetes
  • Cardiovascular disease
  • Hypertension
  • Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA)

If you already have one or more of these conditions, bariatric surgery can help you better manage the conditions to improve your health. You may also wish to consider a duodenal switch procedure if a previous gastric sleeve surgery did not help you to achieve necessary weight loss.

An Overview of the Procedure and Recovery

This is a complex procedure only made possible by Dr. Osuna's extensive training, experience, and skill. Your treatment time will depend on your overall health and other factors. Dr. Osuna strives to perform this procedure laparoscopically, to help patients recover more quickly and face lower risks. After creating the necessary incisions, Dr. Osuna will remove 75 to 80 percent of your stomach. Dr. Osuna will reroute your gastrointestinal tract, reattaching your small intestine to allow food to bypass areas where significant calories would be absorbed.

Once everything is appropriately reattached, Dr. Osuna will close all internal and external incisions. You will likely spend two to three days in the hospital before being sent home. It typically takes a full two weeks or more to recover from this complex procedure.

The stomach is reduced by 75 to 80 percent, and the small intestine is rerouted to shorten the distance to the large intestine. The bypassed portion of the small intestine is altered to carry digestive juices from the liver and pancreas to the last 75 cm of the large intestine.

Choosing the Right Procedure

A duodenal switch procedure typically results in more dramatic weight loss than seen with other bariatric surgeries. Most patients lose more than half of their excess weight within just a year post-surgery. This wight loss can result in significant improvements in health conditions such as high blood pressure and diabetes. By choosing a healthy lifestyle of nutritional food and regular exercise, you can see long-lasting results.

However, it is important that patients understand all considerations and concerns when choosing the appropriate bariatric procedure for their needs. As with other malabsorptive procedures, such as a gastric bypass, a duodenal switch can result in nutrient deficiencies. You can reduce this risk by closely following your post-surgical diet and taking supplements as instructed by Dr. Osuna. If you are not severely overweight or do not suffer from chronic conditions that make it difficult to lose weight, other less invasive procedures may be more appropriate for your needs.
