Achieve a Healthier Weight through Mini Gastric Bypass Surgery

Mini gastric bypass surgery is a form of bariatric surgery that can help patients lose significant amounts of weight. This procedure is considered as an alternate form of gastric bypass surgery, and allows Dr. Jacqueline Osuna to reduce the size of your stomach with a less invasive procedure. This technique reduces the amount of food you can eat and can enhance weight loss results. If you have struggled with weight loss and obesity-related health issues, you might benefit from mini gastric bypass surgery at our Guadalajara and Tijuana, MX, practices.

Mini Gastric Bypass vs. Gastric Bypass

Both mini and traditional gastric bypass procedures are considered malabsorptive and non-reversible. In addition to restricting food consumption, they also restrict caloric and nutrient absorption by bypassing a large portion of the stomach and small intestine. The primary difference between the two procedures is that a mini gastric bypass features a slightly larger gastric pouch and there is one anastomosis, or connecting channels. A regular gastric bypass reduces the size of the stomach even more and features two anastomoses. A mini bypass approach is less invasive and patients are often able to recover more quickly, leaving the hospital and returning to their normal activities sooner.

When Should You Consider Mini Gastric Bypass?

Patients typically consider a mini gastric bypass to lose weight, improve their health, and manage or prevent obesity-related diseases. Many patients who are extremely overweight often choose this procedure over a gastric sleeve because it also restricts calorie absorption while being less invasive than a traditional gastric bypass. Mini gastric bypass is an acceptable treatment for patients who are obese and have a body mass index (BMI) of 40 or greater. This procedure  may also help patients with a BMI that is less than 40 who also suffer from one or multiple co-morbidities, including Type 2 Diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, or sleep apnea.

The Mini Gastric Bypass Procedure

As with most other bariatric procedures, Dr. Osuna performs mini gastric bypass laparoscopically whenever possible. The procedure takes less than two hours to complete and generally requires an average three-day hospital stay. To insert the laparoscope, Dr. Osuna will create several small incisions in the abdomen. Along with the laparoscope, she will also insert necessary surgical instruments.

Dr. Osuna will divide the stomach into two sections. The smaller, tube-like section is where your food will pass through. The small intestine is repositioned so that food will bypass a majority of the intestine, inhibiting caloric and nutrient absorption. Once the bypass is complete, Dr. Osuna will close your incisions. After you are released from the hospital, you can expect to get back to work within about two weeks.

Understanding the Pros and Cons of Mini Gastric Bypass

As with any major surgery, there are general risks. You can reduce these risks by receiving care from an experienced surgeon such as Dr. Osuna and closely following all of her post-operative directions. She typically recommends a special diet and supplements to prevent any nutritional deficiencies.

Mini gastric bypass has significant benefits that many patients feel make it a worthwhile investment. The procedure is typically simpler and takes less time than a traditional gastric bypass. You can also achieve similar, if not greater, results because you can return to normal activities sooner and can expect substantial weight loss within the first year post surgery. You can also see improvements in any co-morbidities you may have been struggling with, improving your lifespan and overall quality of life.
