Achieve Your Weight Loss Goals with the LAP-BAND® System
Obesity and excess weight can severely affect your quality of life and limit your lifestyle. If you are looking for a minimally invasive bariatric surgery that is not permanent, the LAP-BAND® system may be appropriate for you. Dr. Jacqueline Osuna can place the LAP-BAND® system for patients at our Guadalajara and Tijuana, MX, facilities to restrict the stomach’s capacity and allow patients to feel fuller, longer. The level of restriction is easily adjustable and the band can be removed in the future. This procedure can help patients achieve gradual, long-term weight loss while improving overall health conditions. A simple procedure can help get your weight loss journey started.
What is the LAP-BAND® and How Does it Work?
While other bariatric procedures typically make permanent changes to your digestive tract, the LAP-BAND® system is not only adjustable, but it is also removable. Patients can have the device removed once they have reached their goal weight. The LAP-BAND® system consists of an expandable silicone band, a tube, and an access port for easy adjustments. The band is placed around the stomach, and the access port allows Dr. Osuna to add or remove saline through the tube for precise adjustments. The entire system is inserted laparoscopically through small incisions in the abdomen. The medical-grade silicone materials make it safe and less likely to cause allergic reactions.
Is the LAP-BAND® System Right for You?
Bariatric procedures are most appropriate for patients over the age of 18 who have not been able to successfully lose weight through traditional diet and exercise methods. Dr. Osuna typically recommends the LAP-BAND® system for patients whose body mass index (BMI) is greater than 35. It is important that patients have realistic expectations for the procedures and are ready to commit to a healthier lifestyle.
The LAP-BAND® Procedure
The LAP-BAND® procedure takes less than an hour and typically requires one night stay in the hospital for observation. Dr. Osuna will place your device laparoscopically. She will begin by creating tiny incisions in the abdominal area. A laparoscope, or camera, is inserted into these incisions, followed by long, thin instruments. Dr. Osuna will use these instruments to place the LAP-BAND® around the stomach. A small access port is left just beneath the skin’s surface to simplify adjustments.
If you have struggled to achieve your long-term weight loss goals, the LAP-BAND® system can provide you with the extra support you need.
Patients can typically leave our surgical facility within one day of the procedure, and return to work two weeks later. We can review thorough at-home care instructions to facilitate your recovery.
Advantages and Disadvantages of the LAP-BAND®
There are a number of advantages to the LAP-BAND® system over other bariatric procedures. This system is minimally invasive. There are no staples or sutures involved, and the digestive tract is not permanently altered. A less invasive approach can significantly reduce risks related to removing or altering the stomach. Should any complications arise, the LAP-BAND® system is also completely reversible.
As with any surgical procedure, there are some disadvantages. There is the potential for the LAP-BAND® to slip out of place or completely obstruct the stomach. When complications occur, revision surgery is necessary to replace the band. However, the access port makes adjustments simple, reducing your overall risk for complications.
