Eliminate Excess Weight with Gastric Sleeve Plication

For patients who need help achieving their ideal weight, gastric plication may be the answer. Dr. Jacqueline Osuna can perform gastric sleeve plication at our Guadalajara and Tijuana, MX, offices. This procedure creates a fold in your stomach to make it smaller, allowing you to feel fuller from eating less food. Patients who undergo this type of bariatric surgery can expect to lose between a quarter to half of their excess weight in less than a year. This procedure can also reduce your risk for co-morbidities such as Type 2 Diabetes, helping you significantly improve your health and outlook on life.

What is Gastric Sleeve Plication?

This procedure is performed laparoscopically to avoid large incisions and longer recovery time. The sleeve plication technique will suture large folds in the stomach to reduce its size and thereby reducing the amount of food you are able to physically consume. Not only does gastric sleeve plication limit your food intake, but it can make you feel fuller with less food, helping you to lose weight and lower your risk of Type 2 Diabetes and other co-morbidities. Unlike gastric bypass surgery or other malabsorptive options no portion of the stomach is rerouted, making this a less-invasive solution.

Are You a Candidate?

Gastric sleeve plication is recommended for patients with a body mass index (BMI) of 35 or greater with one or more comorbidities, such as diabetes, sleep apnea, or high blood pressure. Dr. Osuna can assess your candidacy for this bariatric procedure during an in-depth consultation. She is dedicated to ensuring that patients undergo the right procedure for their needs, helping lower surgical risks and the need for revision surgery.

How the Procedure Is Performed

Gastric sleeve plication is performed laparoscopically and usually takes less than an hour. Dr. Osuna will begin by making several small incisions in your abdomen. Then she will insert the laparoscope, or camera, along with small instruments, through the incisions. This arrangement allows her to view and operate on the stomach without making the larger incisions required for open surgery.

Dr. Osuna will insert a sizing tube and then create inward folds in the stomach around the tube. After suturing the folds in place, she will remove the sizing tube. Once the stomach size has been reduced and sutured, she can remove the instruments and laparoscope and suture your external incisions. Unlike gastric bypass surgery, this procedure does not require part of the stomach to be resected but rather simply folded and sutured, maintaining more healthy tissue.

Most patients are required to stay in the hospital for one day after surgery for observation and to ensure there are no complications. You will also need to follow a special diet following your procedure. Dr. Osuna will provide you with detailed post-operative instructions that will help you see the greatest benefits from your procedure.

Dr. Osuna is dedicated to ensuring that patients undergo the right procedure for their needs, helping lower surgical risks and the need for revision surgery.

What to Expect after Surgery

Because gastric sleeve plication is less invasive than other forms of bariatric surgery, there are fewer risks involved. One common side effect is nausea and vomiting after the procedure, however, this usually dissipates within a few days. Gastric sleeve plication may also result in slower weight loss than other procedures, but you should still see long-term weight loss. Other risks may include leakage through the surgically created folds, stomach blockage, or stomach expansion. You can mitigate these risks by closely following Dr. Osuna’s post-operative instructions.

Gastric sleeve plication offers many of the same benefits as other bariatric surgeries, including weight loss. Depending on your individual circumstances, the procedure may also be reversible. You can achieve significant weight loss, lowering your risk of serious health conditions and improving your overall quality of life.
